The Modern Muses

These illustrations are a part of an installation I designed for a competition for the Dutch Council of Culture. They asked for an artwork for their so-called blue room: A meeting space where all walls are painted in a very special indigo blue.

The council is an organization that advises the government on how to divide the subsidies within the cultural field. In this way they can be seen as patrons of the arts. In my work I refered to this role by making a connection to the ancient patrons of the arts: the classic muses.
Though the original muses do not longer represent the very divers contemporary art scene. Therefore I created a new division of the roles of the muses more fitting to the current developments. The illustrations I finished for the proposal were: the Muse of Singing, the Muse of Internet Art and the Muse of Literature. I made every muse recognizable by using symbols and objects for their field of art, just like the classic muses, who were always portrayed with an recognisable object.
